A night out in Shinjuku - Fri 30 Mar

Bert and I went for a night out exploring the nightlife in Shinjuku. Bert picked up and I happened to spot him leaving the club. He explained he would see me the following afternoon.

I befriended an American jazz singer, Jeremy, performs at Disney shows in Chiba. We caught the first train home in the morning in opposite directions - he and his friends had to perform that morning at 9am..

Plastic food shops and the big cock monument at Kappabashidoori, Tokyo

I went hunting the plastic food shops, because it really piqued my sense of novelty. But not before a delicious mini can of melon creamsoda Fanta.

When I asked at the post office for directions to the street, I was told enthusiastically by the helpful man working there, in Japanese, to look out for a statue of a chef (or "kokku" in Japanese) and turn right. He then added brightly, in English, "Big cock! Big cock monument!" I had to leave the post office very quickly.

I was a little disappointed by the statue when I got there - I'd expected something bigger.

The items below are all made of plastic. There is this, and much more. If they look delicious, they should - they're designed to sit in food shop windows, to entice customers in to buy the real thing.

Kamakura deity of fertility and children - Thu 29 Mar

This was a touching place to visit. I wrote a paper wish for Keiko and tied it to a wishing stand.

All of the little dolls represent deceased children.

Mothers of deceased children come to dress the statues in children's clothes.

The was a subterranean shrine tunnel network, with a ceiling so low that the Japanese visitors were crouching.

Kamakura Buddha - Thu 29 Mar

To my surprise, for a mere 20 yen (near enough to 20 cents), you could pay to go INSIDE the great buddha statue.

Looking up into the buddha's head from inside.

I can't resist the Engrish.

Novelty dogs strike again

More novelty dog action, in Shibuya, the trendiest part of town.

Shibuya love hotel hunting - Wed 28 Mar

I went hunting exotic love hotels. I was a little disappointed with my luck. My best find wasn't too shabby though - this one had some pretty flashy rooms on preview on their menu board.

Up, up and away?

The twenties come to the neon eighties.

This MUST feel like being on a game show.

A swim with the dolphins?

My first decent cherry blossoms - Ueno park - Wed 28 Mar

A bit of Engrish for you - Ameya markets, near Ueno - Wed 28 Mar
