Before I left for Japan, my Coles boss Jane offered to send me contact details of her husband's Japanese friend's son who lived in Tokyo. I met up with Ryo and his girlfriend of some six years Yuki for dinner. They were both LOVELY. I had such a great night. They took me to an okonomiyaki restaurant (literally, cook what you like - it's like pancakes with cabbage then other fillings, and you cook it yourself at your table.) They said it was famously cheap and delicious, and enjoyed pointing out aspects of the shabby interior, such as the menu held barely together with sticky tape.
Aforementioned menu.
Then they took me to what they descibed as a really ordinary bar for drinks and a dessert, and to see the less flashy parts of real life in Japan. Ryo explained to me the phrase "alcohol harrassment", meaning forcing people to drink booze when they say they can't take any more, and demonstrated on Yuki with some sake. We'd all really hit the tiddles by this stage.
We had delicious desserts, yummo, and a little bit more sake. And some brandy. :P
